Chapter 35: Run for your life
Echo felt like she was living a scene from an Indiana Jones film. Y’know the one, she thought, the one where there’s a giant boulder chasing Indy and he’s running like back end is on fire to get away from it. This is exactly like that.
Except instead of a boulder, she and Barnabas were running from a massive were-shark determined to rip them apart.
“Good thing they aren’t great on land, huh?” she yelled over to Barnabas, who looked like he might keel over and die at any moment.
“Can’t… talk… must… run…” he said. The magician was fiddling with one of the pendants around his neck, a wooden medallion. He caught Echo staring at him and waived her off, too out of breath to explain what he it was for.
And then she heard a familiar voice screaming in pain.
“Yuri!” she yelled.
Barnabas shrugged at her as if to say, so? And Echo fired him a furious glare. She planted her heels and came to a stop, righting the trident she’d taken with her from the village, preparing to take on the shark-man who closed in on them like a car with its brake line cut. She hefted the weapon up above her shoulder and threw it just like Artem had taught her, launching it with her superhuman strength at the shark-man’s head.
With the grace of a prima ballerina, the were-shark side-stepped the projectile and kept on charging at them without missing a beat.
“Are you kidding me,” Echo said.
“Ekk,” Barnabas barked out, so out of breath he couldn’t even form her entire name. His message was clear though—he tossed her his flintlock pistol-shaped magic wand and pointed at their oncoming attacker. She caught it one-handed and aimed, pulling the trigger.
A massive burst of flames erupted from the artifact and a basketball-sized fireball spurted forth, slamming into the shark-man’s chest with perfect aim. The monster launched backward as if kicked by an invisible giant, bounced several times in the sand, then lay still.
“If you could have done that the whole time why were we running?” Echo said.
Barnabas waved his hands around as he gasped for air, then held up one finger.
“You could only do that spell once,” Echo translated.
Barnabas nodded.
Echo tossed the gun back to him and picked up her trident, heading into the brush toward the sound of Yuri’s scream.
They were never after him, she thought. Just me. Why Yuri? Please don’t be dead. There’s no reason for them to hurt him. He’s just been dragged into this because of me. None of this is fair to him.
“We need… to move,” Barnabas said, his breathing almost returning to normal.
“We just fried the one that was chasing us,” Echo said.
“Yeah, and because we did that, the rest of them know where we are,” Barnabas snapped. “That’s why I didn’t shoot the first one.”
“I thought…” Echo said, but she stopped herself when she heard Yuri moaning. She raced into the shadows until she found him, covered in blood and lying next to a barely breathing body of another were-shark.
